Installing Google EDLA

This article explains how to select the Google EDLA interface during the initial setup of your i3CONNECT display. While Google EDLA provides a familiar Android environment, it is often not the best choice for shared spaces.

We recommend using i3CONNECT Studio instead of Google EDLA. In the Google EDLA interface, any user in the room can modify the layout, delete apps, or change settings. This often leads to a messy, inconsistent experience for the next person using the display.

i3CONNECT Studio provides the exact same EDLA experience and app access but includes robust IT management controls and access restrictions via Cortex to ensure the display remains professional, predictable, and easy for every guest to understand.

Before you start

  • Ensure your display is connected to the internet via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

  • This choice is typically made during the first-time installation wizard.

Instructions

  1. Power on your i3CONNECT display to begin the installation wizard.

  2. Follow the on-screen prompts for language, time zone, and network connection.

  3. When prompted to "Choose your experience," select the Google EDLA option.

  4. Sign in with your Google Account to enable Google Mobile Services and the Play Store.

  5. Complete the setup by following the remaining prompts. Your display will now boot into the standard Google EDLA Android interface.

Switching to i3CONNECT Studio later

If you find that the Google EDLA interface is too difficult to manage or the layout is frequently changed by users, you can switch to the optimized i3CONNECT Studio experience at any time without a factory reset.

  1. Open the Settings app from your app drawer or side menu.

  2. Navigate to the i3CONNECT STUDIO section.

  3. Select the i3CONNECT optimized experience.

  4. The display will immediately transition to the Studio interface, allowing you to manage the layout via Cortex.

Switching to Studio retains your installed apps but provides a curated home screen that is easier for guests to navigate and harder for unauthorized users to disrupt.

Troubleshooting

  • Interface looks different than expected: Ensure you selected "Google EDLA" and not "i3CONNECT Studio" during the wizard.

  • Cannot find the choice: Some older models or non-EDLA certified displays do not offer the Google EDLA interface.

  • Layout keeps changing: This is a known behavior of the Google EDLA interface. To prevent this, follow the steps above to switch to i3CONNECT Studio.
