i3TOUCH information about the motion sensor

applicable to devices from i3TOUCH X2

In this article we would like provide more information on how motion sensor works, and which display settings are relevant for the behaviour of the motion sensor.

The motion sensor can wake the display up from a sleep state and is always linked to a sleep timer. But on most displays there are more sleep/standby timers that can be activated. So in this article we would like to explain how the different timers interact based on some example scenarios.

DISPLAY DOES NOT FALL ASLEEP

The i3 motion sensor service is part of i3 System Service, and is responsible for listening to the motion events from the hardware, and triggering the wake / sleep commands. When the display does not fall asleep this means that:

  • Either i3 System Service receives motion sensor events from the system that keeps resetting the timer.

  • Or, the i3 MotionSensorService of i3SystemService is not running at all, and thus not sending sleep / wake commands. This can occur after system app updates. Reboot the display after all app updates, to ensure correct functioning of the motion sensor service.

DISPLAY FALLS ASLEEP BUT DOES NOT WAKE BY MOTION (= STANDBY MODE)

This very likely means that you have a second sleep mode active (i.e. Inactivity Timeout). This Inactivity Timer is part of Android OS, and triggers a "Deeper sleep” also called standby mode, and also locks the screen when you have a PIN set.

The motion sensor can not wake the display from this deeper mode (also, because the screen locked), so in effect, when the Inactivity Timeout is active, the motion sensor settings are overruled for the duration of the deep sleep state.

When both the motion sensor and the Inactivity Timeout are activated in the settings, please be aware that the below scenario can occur:

setting Motion sensor = 15 mins.

setting Inactivity timeout = 30 mins.

  • After 15 minutes without motion -> Sleep, and motion sensor can wake during the next 15 minutes.

  • After 30 minutes without activity (15 minutes later) -> Deep sleep (standby), motion sensor can not wake anymore.

Of course either or both timers can be disabled:

  • On EDLA devices, the Inactivity Timeout is set to 30 minutes by default. The inactivity timer can be manually turned off in the settings app.

  • On non-EDLA displays the Inactivity Timeout setting is available, but set to “off” by default.
